Removing structural vibrations using measurement and simulation

Xi Engineering Consultants combines detailed vibration measurement and advanced modelling to diagnose and solve structural vibration issues in buildings, protecting people, equipment and operations.

The Challenge

Undesirable structural vibration can arise from plant equipment, building services, footfall or wind loading and can affect both human comfort and the performance of sensitive machinery. Problems are particularly acute in laboratories, hospitals and high tech manufacturing facilities where vibration criteria, such as those in BS 5228 and ASHRAE guidance, are stringent. Without the right expertise, project teams may struggle to identify root causes or may resort to ad hoc fixes that fail to address underlying resonances. Xi is frequently asked to investigate these issues, characterise vibration pathways and design practical mitigation that satisfies performance criteria without over engineering.

Our Approach

Xi starts with on site investigation, combining a walk round survey with targeted vibration measurements to understand how the structure and sources behave in practice. Using accelerometers and geophones, the team identifies problem frequencies, resonant modes and transmission paths from sources such as plant rooms or external loading. Where beneficial, finite element models of the structure are developed and calibrated against measurements to explore responses under different isolation or damping strategies. This blend of real data and simulation allows Xi to design cost effective solutions, from tuned mass dampers and isolation mounts to seismic trenches and bespoke supports for ultra sensitive equipment.

The Results

  • Accurate diagnosis of structural resonance and vibration pathways in existing and new buildings.
  • Tailored mitigation designs that satisfy human comfort and sensitive equipment criteria.
  • Reduced need for trial and error fixes, avoiding disruption and unnecessary cost.
  • Solutions proven across applications from commercial offices to cleanrooms and laser laboratories.

Why it matters

As structures become lighter and equipment more sensitive, controlling vibration is increasingly central to building performance. Xi’s integrated measurement and modelling approach gives clients confidence that their buildings will support both people and precision processes. The same methodology can be applied at design stage or retrofit, helping to unlock challenging sites and avoid future complaints, downtime or remedial works.
