Structural dynamics and construction site surveys for safer, smoother builds
Xi Engineering Consultants provides structural dynamics modelling, on site vibration and noise surveys, and construction monitoring that help design teams de risk projects, protect sensitive assets and satisfy planning and health and safety requirements.

The Challenge
Modern construction projects take place in increasingly complex environments. Sites are often close to existing buildings, transport infrastructure and sensitive facilities such as laboratories, hospitals and clean rooms. Design teams must ensure that new structures will behave safely and comfortably under wind, footfall and crowd loading, while also managing the impact of construction noise, vibration and dust on neighbours and workers.
At the same time, planning authorities and clients expect robust evidence that structural dynamics, building acoustics and construction impacts have been properly assessed. If these issues are not understood early, projects can suffer from costly redesigns, delays during construction and disputes with neighbours or regulators. Xi is regularly asked to support clients across the full project lifecycle with structural dynamics assessments, detailed measurement campaigns and independent monitoring.
Our Approach
Xi combines advanced structural dynamics modelling with practical on site measurement and monitoring to give project teams a clear view of how structures and construction activities will behave.
On the design side, Xi’s engineers use finite element and analytical models to study structural resonance, dynamic wind loading, floor vibration due to footfall and the behaviour of large spans. This work includes designing isolation from transport vibration, assessing structural response during fire evacuations and developing tuned mass damper solutions for long span or lightweight structures. For projects that house sensitive equipment or clean rooms, Xi analyses background vibration levels and predicts how new construction or changes in use might affect performance.
To complement modelling, Xi undertakes detailed vibration and noise measurements in existing buildings and on live sites. Using accelerometers and geophones, the team measures background vibration levels, identifies structural resonances and traces vibration pathways from source to receiver. This allows Xi to match equipment frequencies to structural behaviour, design practical isolation schemes and verify the effectiveness of mitigation measures. In parallel, Xi’s acousticians assess internal acoustic performance, specify materials, review designs and evaluate plant room and façade performance to ensure that finished buildings meet planning and user expectations.
During construction, Xi provides site monitoring programmes for noise, vibration and dust at agreed locations, often using automated equipment with real time alarms and trigger levels for email notifications. Data is used to create noise maps, guide mitigation measures such as acoustic barriers or trenches, and demonstrate compliance with local authority requirements. Health and safety assessments, including noise at work, whole body vibration and hand arm vibration surveys, help contractors protect their workforce and meet legal obligations. Where environmental and planning issues arise, Xi contributes predictive noise and vibration modelling, Environmental Impact Assessment inputs, Environmental Statement reviews and acoustic barrier design.
Throughout each commission, Xi’s engineers stay closely involved with the wider project team. They attend site meetings, provide technical update notes, contribute to environmental and design reports and prepare clear final reports that capture lessons for post project review. Where required, Xi also offers expert witness support.
The Results
Why it matters
Structural dynamics, building acoustics and construction impacts are often seen as specialist topics, yet they sit at the heart of whether a project is safe, compliant and acceptable to its neighbours. By bringing together advanced simulation, accurate measurement and practical construction monitoring, Xi helps clients move from uncertainty to evidence based decisions.
This integrated approach supports smoother planning, more predictable construction programmes and better performing buildings, whether the project involves high rise offices, mixed use developments, healthcare facilities or research and manufacturing sites.
