AC/ DC Modelling
Electromagnetic fields underlie the operation of motors, generators and transformers where coupling between the electric and magnetic field components govern device behaviour. In certain situations, it is appropriate to consider only the electric or magnetic field. A capacitive touch screen simulation requires a model of the electric field to determine the impedance changes induced between adjacent electrodes. A permanent magnet bearing requires a model of the magnetic field to determine their stiffness when subjected to displacements in each direction. COMSOL Multiphysics is the principal simulation package used by Xi, for which Xi are certified consultants and recognised internationally. COMSOL provides the capability to solve for electromagnetic fields in stationary, frequency and time dependent situations through its AC/DC interface. Finite Element techniques are employed to accurately model a geometry which can be combined with Boundary Elements to capture the effect of infinite domains at minimal computational cost. Physical rotations and translations in generator and maglev applications, for example, can be readily solved for in three dimensions and used to derive induced torques and forces directly. Electrical circuits are often an integral part of electromagnetic devices and their behaviour can also be fully coupled into the electromagnetic domain.
Many real-world applications for electromagnetics involve other physical domains. An example of this is loudspeakers, which require the consideration of structural mechanics and acoustics with all three domains fully coupled to accurately model the system.
