Numerical simulations using methods such as finite element analysis are powerful techniques that can aid design whilst drastically reducing the time to market and the expenses of manufacturing and testing prototypes. Often organisations, whether they are start-ups or mature companies with R&D departments, lack the software, capacity or experience, to perform numerical simulations.

This process commonly involves collaborating with engineers to determine a sound modelling approach based on engineering inputs, such as geometry, material, physical processes, and loads and the required model output, such as stress field, acoustic load, frequency response and localised flow rates.
Often clients require minor modification to the model in response to design changes, for example, a change to the thickness of one component in a larger assembly due to commercial reasons. It is important that the effect these changes may have on a system, the fatigue life or fluid flow is determined. Typically, the underlying model is very complex with interconnected geometric parameters, meshing and boundary conditions making it impossible for a non-expert to make this minor change. Xi create front-ends to models using COMSOL Applications that provide the end-user with a suite of parameters that can be altered without damaging the underlying model. These front-end applications make it possible for non-experts to make changes, run the model and obtain results without further input for Xi or a client’s simulation department. These COMSOL Applications have proven valuable to technicians requiring rapid modelling output or organisations who lack their own simulation departments.
